History of Teacup Chihuahuas

One of the most popular dog breeds is the Teacup Chihuahuas. Not only that ordinary people are fond of the cute Teacup Chihuahuas but famous Hollywood celebrities at the same time. It is a breed that was named after a state in the country of Mexico where this tiny canine was discovered during 1850's.

As far as the developmental history of the Teacup Chihuahuas is concerned, pet fanatics are having a hard time tracing it. More often than not, the history of the Teacup Chihuahuas is just based mainly on theories as well as speculations. However, there were few archeological finds that would set as sufficient evidence that the Teacup Chihuahuas already existed during the Pre-Columbian times in Mexico. Aside from that, the evidences also proved that the Teacup Chihuahuas outdated the other ancient dog breeds located in America.

There is also a common theory about the Teacup Chihuahuas. They said that the Teacup Chihuahuas are descendants of the breed called Techichi. Techichis are the dogs that were considered by the Toltecs as their companions. Afterwards, the Techichi were bred with the small Chinese dogs that were bought by the Spanish conquerors in America. This then resulted to the Teacup Chihuahuas.

There were only records of the Techichi breed in the ninth century. However, there is a great chance that the Techichi is the native Mexican ancestors of the Teacup Chihuahuas. The remains of the Teacup Chihuahuas' ancestors resemble closely to the breed. But the Techichi were slightly bigger than the average Teacup Chihuahuas that were found during the 2nd century BC in Great Pyramid of Cholula. Aside from the Teacup Chihuahuas, it is also said that the Techichis might be the ancestors of another breed called Mayans as well.

When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs, the ancestors of the Teacup Chihuahuas became a status symbol for the upper class. Some also suggested that the early ancestors of the Teacup Chihuahuas were always present in religious ceremonies so that the locals will be saved from their sins. Moreover, the Techichis were also believed to be the guides of the spirits so that they may be lead to the world of the dead.

Another belived reason why the Teacup Chihuahuas got smaller because of the cross breeding with Chinese Crested Dog as well as other dogs that has a similar breed. Later on, in a letter from Christopher Columbus to the King of Spain, he described a small dog that perfectly fits the description of the Teacup Chihuahuas.

The modern Teacup Chihuahuas were discovered during the 1850's in the old ruins which is situated near the Casas Grandes located in Chihuahua, a state in Mexico. This is where the breed got its name.

The first few states where Teacup Chihuahuas became prominent include New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. It was later developed when it was introduced in United States. From then on, the Teacup Chihuahuas became a popular breed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Teacup Chihuahuas only in 1904.

Hi, great Hub!

I thought that the AKC only recognises the "standard" chihuahua and not the teacup chihuahua?
